What is a PCD?
Photobucket

The PCD / Pitch Circle Diameter is the method used to describe the spacing of wheel and hub stud or bolt holes often called the Stud Pattern. It is the diameter of the circle that can be drawn to pass through the centre point of each mounting hole. On a wheel with an even number of holes, it can be measured from the centre of one opposite hole to the other. On a wheel with an odd number of holes it must be measured from one stud, through the centre of the pitch circle to an imaginary point between the two opposite holes. This can make calculating 5 stud PCDs very tricky. PCDs or Stud patterns notation shows the number of studs (or holes) and then the pitch circle diameter, eg. 4x100, has 4 studs with a Pitch Circle Diameter of 100mm.

How they work

To use the EasyPCD you line up pairs of holes on the EasyPCD with opposite pairs of wheel bolt holes.
When you have lined up the holes just read the PCD from the line between the pair of holes on the EasyPCD and thats your measurement.
With four stud wheels or hubs it is the directly opposite holes that are measured, on five stud wheels there are no opposite holes so you use te second hole or stud round. Below are some pictures of EasyPCDs in use, checking a 4x100mm wheel and a 5x112mm wheel.

Who is EasyPCD?

EasyPCD is me, Mark Smith. I use the alias markbognor on several forums and it is my general internet identity. To contact me directly use the phone number at the top, but please call after 3pm. E-mail is by far the most effective method of communication because my day job prohibits me from answering calls during working hours.

I accept no responsibility for you measuring the PCD of your wheels incorrectly. The EasyPCD is not a substitute for experience and the correct use of measuring tools. It will provide you with a quick and easy to use guide to your wheel or hub PCD. Do not fit wheels to your car that you are not certain are the correct PCD, if in doubt speak to a professional.
